A school in bloom

At B’ Primary School of Lakatamia – Agios Mamas, potting soil and ornamental plants were purchased to create new flower beds, helping to beautify and green the school’s inner courtyard as well as the surrounding walkways outside classrooms and laboratories. In addition, existing plant containers and flower beds were enriched with fresh potting soil to support the growth of plants that had been planted in previous years.

This environmental initiative directly supports the school’s sustainability policy for the year, which focuses on creating a greener and more attractive school environment. The aim is to maintain the school as a welcoming, healthy, and appealing space for both children and adults, where they can socialise and enjoy suitable conditions for learning and recreation. At the same time, the school seeks to be accessible, functional, and utilised as an outdoor learning environment that supports educational objectives while enhancing local biodiversity.

Through initiatives such as this, students develop environmental awareness and adopt environmentally responsible habits within the school community. Their active participation in planting, caring for plants, and engaging with nature promotes sustainability on multiple levels and provides valuable hands-on learning experiences.

All students in the school were involved in implementing the project from the very beginning. They participated in filling the flower beds with soil, planting the flowers, carrying out the initial watering, and continuing with regular and coordinated monitoring and maintenance. Awareness was further reinforced through student-led announcements and reminders. The project was also integrated into various areas of the curriculum, including Environmental Education, Science, and Greek Language lessons.

New flower beds were created, while existing planting areas were enriched with fresh soil to improve plant growth and further enhance the appearance of the school garden.
